More than just dancing with a stick, Saidi is a masculine, earthy style from Upper Egypt.
Experience its joy and power!

Saidi fundamentals - Sunday 1 November, 1-3 pm
Learn to recognise Saidi music and dance it with a different flavour from classical bellydance. Discover how to hold, spin and work with the assaya (cane) and learn simple but effective moves and combinations. Suitable for Beyond Beginner dancers with little or no experience in Saidi, or for more experienced dancers wanting a solid technical foundation as preparation for the choreography workshop.

Saidi combinations and choreography - Sunday 8 November, 1-3 pm
For those already familiar with basic Saidi style and stick use, we delve deeper into technique.
Middle Eastern Dance is a very emotionally expressive art form and each belly dance style can be interpreted through elemental imagery, energy and feel. In this fun workshop four miniature dance combinations will be taught that best reflect each of the four elements. EARTH will focus on a grounded,
Tribal/folkloric style sequence; WATER will incorporate sinuous, sensual floor work; AIR will express the light delicacy and elegance of the Classical Egyptian style; and FIRE sparks with the energy and joy of gypsy dance. The combinations will be accompanied with the appropriate music and expression associated with each style.
The belt base is covered in a patch design of various colors and texture of 100% leather. The belt is 36 inches long not including the tie ends. The tie ends are about 15 inches long. The belt is lined and had an elastic casing in the back that can be gathered to fit better around the hips for the dancer with curves. If you need to have the belt shorten it can be done. The belt has 3 grouping of leather fringe that are also 100 % leather and is floor length. Between the grouping of fringe there are metal chains with bells for sound and movement.

This is the 1st and only one of this kind that I have made so far, so it is a one of a kind piece of wearable art. .This is for a dancer who is daring, dark and want's to be notice.
May 11th, 2008

Venue: Launceston.

10:00 am-12:00 pm Sword Choreography—The use of the Scimitar sword in Middle Eastern dance is a powerful and dramatic display that demonstrates the balancing skills of the dancer. The sword is a beautiful but dangerous prop and audiences are often spellbound by a dancer's use of it. Following on from last year's taster workshop on sword technique, participants will learn a short Oriental belly dance routine that will help them gain confidence, and practice their poise, balance and blade technique.

12:00 pm—1:00 pm Lunch. BYO.

1:00 pm—3:00 pm Earth, Air, Water, Fire - Middle Eastern dance is a very emotionally expressive artform and each belly dance style can be interpreted through elemental imagery, energy and feel. Four miniature dance combinations will be taught that best reflect each of the elements. EARTH will focus on a grounded, Tribal/folkloric style sequence; WATER will incorporate sinuous, sensual floor work; AIR will express the light delicacy and elegance of the Classical Egyptian style; and FIRE sparks with the energy and joy of gypsy dance. The combinations will be accompanied by the appropriate music and expression associated with each style.
Bring: Sword, lunch, bottle of water, paper and pen. Participants must have at

hope you are all well. I'm pleased to announce we are now selling copies of our Feast of the Senses DVD - our showcase event highlighting some beautiful tribal performances from groups in Brisbane, and surrounding areas including performances from Urban Qabila, Nina from Gypsy Rain, DrumDance, Downunder Tribal, Kazuri Tribe, Kismet, Saahirah Ravyn & of course the Blossoms.

DVDs are $40 with funds going to the Qld Cancer Council from each sale :)

Also - for anyone looking for Tribal in Brisbane, the Blossoms are expanding - September 26 we'll be offering classes in our new location at the Brisbane Powerhouse....so we'll have Tribal Basics classes running in two locations (thus answering the age old issue of people in Brissy not wanting to cross the river - we are now northside AND southside)

All info on the newly painted, fresh website www.tribalblossoms.com

Lastly - I cant wait to see Devi next week, will be great to finally catch up after what feels ages :)

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

http://totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD.Calendar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2007.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

I brought back 2 pairs of Melodia pants from the US and the person changed their mind and didn't want them. I kept one pair for myself, which I constantly wear and love, but I still have the other pair unopened out of the package.

It is a Medium size Pocket deconstructed style, earth / olive colour. 34" inseam fits 5'6" - 5'9" (or shorter, I usually like my pants long) and accomodates US sizes 6-8-10.

You can see the pictures here:
http://shena.smugmug.com/gallery/2743480#145747393

I absolutely LOVE these pants and wear them all the time, I think the person didn't want them because it's not the usual black bellydance pants, but I wear them everywhere and they look great with all outfits, not just bellydancing.

I am letting them go for less than what I paid for them, for AU$90, ono. I hope they find a lovely home!

You can hear a few of the songs at cdbaby.com/cd/belaharr or www.rythmpig.com (my personal website), and order the CD either place. If you like any of the sample songs and end up dancing to them, let me hear from you because I love to hear which ones people like the most.

It's been less than a month and I'm already starting to forget who was who and who did what. Silly me left my camera at home in Hedland, so the only shots I have is a couple of back-stagers that a friend took of us. There was just so much going on! I know there were plenty of flashes going off at the performances, so there MUST be photos out there somewhere... Keti's page doesn't have a festival gallery >>sob<< so please, you are my only hope!

Some of my favourite performances were Kismet Tribe's 'Hung up' and the drum solo by the Betty Page lookin' duo - they were so CUTE! And the crazy frog dance (hilarious!), the Moroccan tray dance, Rose's fiery solo, the very cute milaya dance, the sword dances, the stick dances, the gypsy tribal, Womanjah's amazing "spell" and oh, the list goes on and on!

It's always fab to see the creativity that pours forth at the festival. I come back home feeling so inspired and invigorated. Can't wait to see you all again next year!

Just joined this tribe and I noticed a few threads about the belly dance scene in Brisbane. I am not a professional dancer (an intermediate student) so I can really only comment on the classes and some restuurants where I have seen dancers

I am learning through Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (of which Maria Masselos is a co-founder (I think)). My teacher is Susan Buntine (the other half of that co-founder team I beleive)
I have been to a few restaurants in Brisbane which have dancers (all dancers have been from the academy, I am sure there is a whole scene out there that I dont know about)

I direct a tribal belly dance group but have taught cabaret in the past and still dance with a small group of long time friends who just can't give up the glamour completely.
Please let me hear from you if you are within easy driving distance of Perth because I would love to meet you, attend a class if possible and generally just indulge myself with dancers of like mind across the world. You can visit my web site for a few more details on who and where we are at my web site, www.womenstribalfusion.com.
Thanks & really looking forward to summer in December, T

You are a Folkloric Belly Dancer! In fact, we can't even call you a belly dancer -- you prefer the term Raks Sharki or Oriental Danse. Your choreographies are spot on authentic and your costumes are the real deal. You wouldn't dream of doing a Saudi step in a Ghawazee dress. A card-carrying member of the ethnic police, you keep the rest of us in line -- the debke line, that is!

Weird.... that is so NOT me!

Quite basially we are a "grass roots" organisation devloping a network for belly dance teachers and enthusiasts. We use buying power to negotiate discounts on imoprtant services and products such as licences and insurance for performers and teachers. The prices we have are exclusive to ABA inc members and can save you literally hundreds of dollars.

Amulya I have replied to each of your emails outlilning the organisation. All you need to do is visit the site and download the files which tells you all about the policy we offer and the company who covers us.

Its agreat group of people and we are always looking for new ideas and ways to help out our members. Anyone can visit the site and learn about what we have to offer. Some pages are memners only but they are all the fun stuff.

If any one has any questions feel free to email me abainc@dodo.com.au
